one thousand and eight name of Shiva)

INTRODUCTION AND (A DICTIONARY OF NAMES)

                                    Dr. Ram Karan Sharma

It is for the first time that he eight versions of Sivashasranamstotra are being brought out in one volume.

If we leave asided the Mahabhagavata &Deviuppurana version which appears to be of recent origin, the remaining seven versions may conveniently be divided into two groups.

a) based on the Anusasana Parvan version of MB and

b) based on the Santi Parvan version of MB

Both the Linga Purana versions and the Siva Purana version belong to the former category. The Vayu Purana and Brahgma Purana versions belong to the second category.

All these versions are compiled together. Nilakantha's and Ganesa Natu's Commentaries are also included. The relevant passages from the RV and Yajurveda are slso appended. A Comprehensive Introduction  and Glossary of Namans as in the Anusasana Parvan version of the Critical Edition of MB add to the productivity of this volume for  further research.
