This volume comprised of authentic articles on 'The Treatment of Pathos in the Sanskrit Dramas' by some of the eminent scholars in the Indological field. The present volume is divided into three parts. Part one deals with the general discussion of pathos (karuna), its delineation by our acharyas and comparison with Western tragedy. The Sanskrit drama, in spite of its serious tone and deeply moving pathos, averts a formal tragedy in its western concept. This part presents the various viewpoints of the scholars on the problem of pathos.
The second part tries to evaluate the technique, objects and heights of the treatment of karuna by our different dramatists. It contains 18 articles by various eminent authors and is sufficient to prove the important place of pathos in the Sanskrit dramas and highlights the karuna consciousness of Sanskrit dramatists, both ancient and modern.
The third part deals mainly with the 'Pathos and Bhavabhuti'. Bhavabhuti excels all the other dramatists in the treatment of the Pathos. Karunyam have expressed their viewpoints in their articles. It is this poet who enables us to reach the magnitude of pathos.
In the beginning comprehensive general introduction on the 'pathos in the dramatic literature' by the editor Dr. Pushpendra Kumar of University of Delhi, highlights the magnitudes of pathos in our literature. The present book is a study of the entire feed of Sanskrit dramatic literature with special reference to pathos. This is a first comprehensive effort to analyse the motive, design and structure of significant series plays in Sanskrit. It is hoped that it will revive interest in Sanskrit dramatic studies and inspire for the pushing into the subject depths and heights.
