( A COMPREHENSIVE SANSKRIT ENGLISH
LEXICON) SHABDA-SAGAR BY
PROF. HORACE HAYMAN WILSON
REVISED & ENLARGED
COMPILED FROM VARIOUS RECENT ANTHORITIESH. H. Wislon prepared the first Sanskrit-English Dictionary (1819) from materials compiled by native scholars, supplemented by his own researches. This work was only superseded by the Sanskritwörterbuch (1853–1876) of Rudolf Roth and Otto von Bohtlingk, who expressed their obligations to Wilson in the preface to their great work. Though the first edition of the Sanskrit Dictionary was published at Calutta, no work has yet appeared to supersede the preface with which it was accompanied. Many contributions towards a history of Sanskrit lecography have indeed, since incidentally been made by Lassen, Roth, Goldstucker, Weber, Hall, Westergaard, ZBohtlingk and others; but they are scattered over various works and periodicals, so that a treatise on this branch of Indian Literature, which should reflect the present state of Sanskrit scholarship, still remain a desideratum. This book will be welcomed by all scholars and students of Sanskrit Literature.
