There is no other name in the history of ancient Indian political thought which commands as much commands as much popularity and respect as that of the author of Arthasastra.  The name of the author of Arthasastra is found mentioned in numerous works in Sanskrit literature.
Studies embracing the different aspects of Arthasastra are carried out even at present in research-oriented institutions. But the impetus provided by Ganapati Sastri after the intitial discovery and publication by Shama Sastri can never be over-estimated. He brought to bear on the topic his rich experience and uncanny talent. His effort in composing the first ever complete commentary on the Arthasastra is stupendous, to say the least. F. Edgerton has no hesitation to pronounce that “Dr. Ganapati Sastri edition of the Kautaliya Arthasastra, with commentary, is decidedly the best edition of that all important work in existence.”
